In this blog, we are featuring a captivating and eye-opening documentary titled “Apart”, filmed by PBS. This video highlights the story of 3 mothers who were incarcerated for drug-related charges: Lydia, Amanda, and Tomika. It shows the struggle that these women, and many in their situation face. From losing time with their children and loved ones to readjusting back to life, work and family, “Apart” shows how each of these women fought to overcome the stigma and societal label of ‘felon’.

As stated in the documentary, Ohio has one of the largest female prison populations with over 4,000 incarcerated women. Amanda, Lydia, and Tomika were 3 of the lucky 30 who were chosen to attend a new daily program outside of the prison walls.

Rehabilitation programs offered by LMM include culinary classes (Chopping for Change aka C4C), life coaching, occupational coaching, and more. In addition, many of these programs were offered and taught by previously incarcerated women who could identify with their struggles and help to encourage those in the program.
