About Hawken School 

Hawken School was founded in 1915. It is a co-education private day school that offers classes for grades K-12. Their mission is to “prepare students to navigate a complex and dynamic world with self-confidence and determination; embrace challenges with disciplined analysis and creativity, and engage others with empathy and integrity.”

Our Work with Hawken School

We were contacted by Hawken School Upper Campus to help create a learning design center solution. The learning center design solution needs to cultivate an innovative problem-based, experiential learning center. To start, we conducted a discovery learning process.

This learning process begins with the engagement of administration, faculty, staff, and students in a dynamic process that gains an understanding of the school pedagogy and expected learning experience required to support problem-based learning. 

studioTECHNE’s Learning Design Center Solution

Teaching spaces were viewed as laboratories or studios where hands-on individual learning, participatory learning, and group learning are all supported. The teaching studios are surrounded by fabrication labs, media creation labs, common spaces, and an entrepreneurship center allowing immediate access to making as a direct function of learning. 

It was important to create a learning design center that allowed students a complex and dynamic experience where they can engage learning with self-confidence and determination, have spaces for disciplined analysis, and spaces for creative exploration. As part of our learning design center, we designed spaces where above all else, students are able to engage their instructors and other students with empathy and integrity.
